Mayim Bialik, Ian Ziering and other celebrities are returning to acting for the coverage it provides.
Over the last few years, actors that had been out of the spotlight for some time have been returning with insurance benefits as their motivator. Stars that had made big names for themselves but that had moved on to other things are stepping back on set to cover their families.
The Big Bang Theory actress, Mayim Bialik recently made a YouTube video in which she discussed her return.
Bialik had been a child star in the hit 1990s sitcom “Blossom.” That said, after the show came to an end, the actress decided to take a break from acting in order to pursue her education. That, she certainly did. In fact, she obtained a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. That said, despite her extensive education, Bialik returned to acting and was cast on one of the top sitcoms currently on television, “The Big Bang Theory.”
The actress recently posted a question and answer video on her self-titled YouTube channel. The video, titled “Answering Your Questions” gave viewers the opportunity to ask questions via Twitter so Bialik could answer them. A “gazillion” fans asked: “You have a PhD in neuroscience. What made you decide to get back to acting?”
It was the insurance benefits that brought Bialik back to acting as an adult.
Bialik responded: “The True story is that I had my first son in graduate school and my second son just after I got my doctorate and I was teaching neuroscience. But I actually was running out of health insurance and I had never acted as an adult and I figured if I could even just get, like, a job here or there it would allow me to have insurance for my kids and my family. So that’s actually why and how I got back into acting again.”
Bialik’s story is far from unique. In fact, insurance benefits are starting to draw many celebrities back into the spotlight. Among them, Ian Ziering has been one of the most open about the subject. “Even at the beginning, I only did the movie to cover my insurance,” said the actor in an interview about his role in Sharknado.
In fact, Ziering was willing to risk his acting career in order to ensure that his growing family would remain insured. “I had to get my insurance in order, and you have to make so much through SAG (Screen Actors Guild) to get it, and this met that requirement. So I was like, ‘All right, I’ll do it,’ but I did it begrudgingly.” The reason was that he was certain the movie would be a terrible career-ending flop.
